Problems that can be encountered
when dealing with social services
Social services work under the tight
control of guidelines which tend to be strictly adhered to.
How this
can work to an advantage or disadvantage for people
Social services
follow the rules set down in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (see Home
Page). This can be fine for children who tend to reach "adulthood"
around the age of 18. So that they are then able to make decisions
for themselves. However, for people with learning difficulties it
is not so straightforward.

How do you
deal with a situation where you disagree with a decision that has supposed
to have been taken by your relative who has learning difficulties?
It is probably best to suggest
to social services that you have a meeting and try to communicate with
them as much as possible. If an agreement cannot be reached with social
services, it may be best to ask for an independent assessment.

GPs are to oversee
social care for vulnerable patients under contract changes
In an announcement,
Jeremy Hunt the health secretary, stated that family doctors will “case
manage proactively” patients with complex needs by developing
and regularly reviewing personalised care plans that will cover health
and social care needs, under their contract for 2014-15.
This should add
strength to decisions taken that concern vulnerable patients:
